Personal Protective Equipment
According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), there are about 2,000 job-related eye injuries that require medical treatment each day in the United States. It's estimated that about a third of these injuries are serious enough to be taken to an emergency room.1 However, many eye injuries could be prevented if individuals used appropriate and well fitting protective eyewear.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) allows employees to work in hazardous environments when essential operations cannot be altered and administrative controls cannot completely eliminate potential risks.
If PPE is to be used at a workplace, the agency should also implement a PPE program to ensure that PPE is used effectively and correctly. A PPE program should address the hazards present, maintenance of PPE, correct use of PPE, employee training on the use of PPE, and a system to monitor the continued effectiveness of the program.
FOH can evaluate your existing PPE program or help implement a new one.
FOH's Personal Protective Equipment services include:
- Assessments of facilities and/or operations to determine if employees are being overexposed to potential hazards.
- Job hazard analyses to examine the relationship between the worker, the tasks, the tools and the work environment. FOH professionals can prescribe safer solutions where indicated.
- Recommendations on the appropriate PPE, for designated tasks.
- Training on the proper use, care and maintenance of required PPE.
- Medical monitoring and fit testing for employees who require respiratory protection.

- Electrical Protection Equipment,1910.137 — gloves, protective clothing
- Hand Protection, 1910.138 — gloves (chemical resistive, electrical, puncture resistive)
